Region 7 Interschool Tournament

Crooked Creek Park Gym

Master Mitchell Dunn, Chapin Martial Arts, hosted the annual Interschool Winter Tournament in Chapin, SC on Saturday, March 1, 2008.  This annual tournament is a “training opportunity” for judges and competitors alike.

Prior to the tournament, the Masters conducted a championship judging and referee clinic. Master Jim Mars, Master Randy Kuehner, Master Joe Scota and Master Mitchell Dunn reviewed tournament procedures and presented scenarios that judges might encounter during a tournament. They later conducted a “hands on” evaluation of each student’s ability to perform Corner and Center judge duties.  In addition to the practical application evaluation, students also took a written exam.  Many first time Corner or Center judges had the opportunity to practice their knowledge and skill during the tournament.

Opening ceremonies for the tournament began at 1:00 pm.  Eighteen Tiny Tigers and Little Dragons participated.  The children were presented with participation trophies. There were over 100 participants, with 65 divisions.  Many white and orange belts had the opportunity to participate, gaining valuable experience and confidence.  The newly trained judges also practiced their skill under the watchful eyes of the Masters who were careful to pair the newer judges with the more experienced.

Competition can be a stressful and anxiety provoking experience for old and new students of Tang Soo Do.  Master Dunn’s Winter Tournament continues to provide Region 7 students a safe and instructive opportunity to practice their skills in competition.   One two and a half foot tall Tiny Tiger ran up to me showing off his trophies shouting, “I won two, I won two!”  That kind of joy is hard to describe!
