November 11-12, 2005This year’s Region 7 Championship started off with a bang! Literally! On Friday night Grandmaster Shin instructed the class on how to perform Sae Kye Hyung Il Boo with power and speed. He conducted the hung to the banging of the Region 7 drum. He commented on how much better the group looked after completing the session as compared to the beginning. During the second half of the evening’s training session with Grandmaster Shin, he talked about Ki. He had the class perform a couple of exercises that were quite interesting. The first exercise determined which way the key was turning in your body. It turns either clockwise or counter clockwise. Grandmaster Shin then demonstrated how strong Ki can be. He asked the students to think of a good happy thought. After taking three, deep-cleansing breaths and thinking a good thought, the student was then instructed to extend their right arm and make a circle with their thumb and index fingers. A partner was to then insert their first two fingers on each hand into the circle and try to break it. While the student was thinking of a good thought, the circle was hard to break, believe it or not. Then the students were asked to think of a bad or sad thought and repeat the exercise. Upon thinking of a bad thought, the circle was easily broken. Saturday morning brought sunshine, warm breezes and horses on the Myrtle Beach beaches. Tournament time! The tournament began and Grandmaster Shin was introduced followed by Brandon Holcombe, last year’s champion. Introductions of Chief Instructors, Black Belt promotions, and two special promotions to Sah Dan, Mr. Jim Mars and Mr. Joe Scota took place. Kwang Chang Nim also had a presentation for Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mars for their contributions to the Building Fund which they are now in the $1000 Club. The Region 7 Hall of Fame recipients for this year are: Studio of the Year - Scota Karate; Family of the Year – The Shealy Family of the Chapin Martial Arts; Instructor of the Year – Mr. Jim Mars; and Student of the Year – Tina Stevens. Mr. Chris Gary was presented with the Fall Black Belt Test Spirit award. Brent Lacy was present with a check for $1000 from the Scholarship Chairman Mr. Eric King. After the celebrations, the competition began. The six rings ran smoothly and time passed quickly. The Tiny Tiger/Little Dragon division was just precious. . One by one, the rings closed down leaving just ring #4. The time had come to determine the winner of this year’s championship cup. It came down to the last two competitors, Todd Davis and Brandon Holcombe. After a hard fought bought, Brandon Holcombe was again the champion for Region 7. Ms. Jackie Forrester was awarded the Region 7 Senior Cup. Congratulations to all competitors for showing the true spirit of Tang Soo Do. Submitted by Mrs. Ann Bowers E Dan, Chapin Martial Arts Top]
